PM call with King Salman of Saudi Arabia, 27 March 2015
David Cameron spoke with His Majesty King Salman of Saudi Arabia on Saudi action in Yemen and the negotiations on Iran's nuclear capabilities.

A Downing Street spokesperson said:

This evening, the Prime Minister spoke with His Majesty King Salman of Saudi Arabia. This was their first call since he became King and in the context of the recent destabilising events and violence in Yemen.

The Prime Minister thanked HM King Salman for hosting the Foreign Secretary earlier this week for discussions on Yemen and Iran, which both agreed had been very worthwhile.

“The Prime Minister emphasised the UK’s firm political support for the Saudi action in Yemen, noting that it was right to do everything possible to deter Houthi aggression, to support President Hadi and his legitimate government.

They both expressed concern that Houthi action would lead to an escalation in terrorism and extremism enabling AQAP and ISIL to find a foothold in Yemen, which would pose a serious threat to both our nations. He reiterated that Britain will do all it can to support the Saudis to stop that from happening and offered to provide further UK support. This was welcomed by HM King Salman. The Prime Minister also urged HM King Salman to put strong non-military pressure on the Houthis, Saleh and Iran to pull back from the brink and engage in the political process in good faith.

Finally, the Prime Minister reassured His Majesty that while negotiations on Iran’s nuclear capabilities are proceeding, the UK would never agree a deal that did not stop Iran getting a nuclear weapon.
