I’d like to wish everyone in the Jewish Community here in Britain and around the world a Shanah Tovah.
I know this is a time when many of you will be reflecting on the past year and looking to the challenges ahead. On the former, I would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to the tremendous contribution your community has made to this country and continues to make each year. Last year Dayan Ehrentreu presented me with the original copy of the Lexicon written by my great, great grandfather Emile Levita, a German-Jewish banker who came here to this country 150 years ago. I was incredibly moved by his story. And it made me appreciate all the more what the Jewish community has brought to Britain.
As for the future, I know that this New Year comes at a time of particular concern to many about events around the world and about the welfare of Israel. So let me reaffirm that, with me, you have a Prime Minister whose belief in Israel is unshakeable and whose commitment and determination to work for peace in Israel is deep and strong. Britain will continue to push for peace, but will always stand up for Israel against those who wish her harm.
