Press briefing: morning 2 December 2013
The Prime Minister’s Spokesperson (PMS) answered questions on the China trade mission, energy bills and immigration.

China trip

Asked about the delegation accompanying the Prime Minister (PM) to China, the PMS said the list of delegates was drawn up by UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) and determined on the basis of the very best business opportunities possible. China presented huge opportunities and the PM wanted to take a 100-strong delegation of companies from across the key sectors of the British economy. Each delegate paid their own way on the trip.

Energy bills

Asked about measures to reduce energy bills, the PMS said the PM had been clear it was right to take measures on levies and charges. A review into market competition had also been announced. People wanted to see cost pressures going down. The government was helping hardworking families where it could and the cost of shifting levies would be met by the Chancellor’s clampdown on tax avoidance.

Immigration

Asked about immigration from Bulgaria and Romania, the PMS said there was concern about the transitional controls coming to an end. The PM was right to take the measures announced the previous week.
