The Prime Minister today joined senior representatives from Airbus in the Indonesian capital Jakarta to sign a major deal for 11 new aircraft with national carrier Garuda Indonesia.
The wings for the aircraft are built at the Airbus plant in Broughton, north Wales and designed at the Airbus plant in Filton, near Bristol.
Arriving in Indonesia, the Prime Minister said the Airbus deal was “good news for the UK aerospace industry”.
Trade tour
David Cameron is in Indonesia as part of a four-day trade tour of Japan and South East Asia, and is accompanied by a senior business delegation in a bid to help UK companies break into this fast-growing economic power.
Speaking to the BBC at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport, Mr Cameron explained that trade with the fasting growing economies in the world will help Britain out of economic difficulties.
He said:
I think we need to recognise that so much of the power in the world is going to be to the South and to the East and we need to rebuild those relationships.
We’ve got a good standing here because we’re one of the largest investors into Indonesia, but we could be doing far better in terms of our exports and our sales.
That’s why I’ve packed a plane full of business people to come here to make those links to create those jobs and investment back at home.
Later today, Mr Cameron will hold talks with the Indonesian President, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
