This statement provides an update on the AAIB investigation into an accident involving an Extra NG, G-MIIL, at Upper Heyford, Oxfordshire, on 2 April 2022.
The aircraft was returning from an aerobatics flight when the canopy suddenly shattered. The pilot, the only occupant, was seriously injured and had to bail out of the aircraft, which then crashed into an unoccupied building. There were no other people injured.
The AAIB investigation has focused on the cause of the canopy breaking and has recently concluded some scientific tests. The report is nearing completion at which time it will be published by the AAIB.
