Dame Carol Black
Professor Dame Carol Black is Principal of Newnham College Cambridge and ExpertAdviser on Health and Work to NHS England and Public Health England. She chairs theboard of Think Ahead, the Governments fast-stream training programme for Mental HealthSocial Workers and is a member of Rand Europes Council of Advisers, the Strategy Boardfor the Defence National Rehabilitation Centre, and the Advisory Board of Step up to Serve.
As Principal of Newnham Dame Carol is on several committees in Cambridge University: theEquality and Diversity Committee, the Advisory Board of the Centre for Science and PublicPolicy, and the Strategic Working Group on Access and Participation. She is a Deputy Vice-Chancellor, patron of the Womens Leadership Centre in the Judge Business School, and amember of the Universitys Leadership Network.
Dame Carol has compiled three independent reviews for the UK Government: of the healthof the working-age population in 2008 as National Director for Health and Work; of sicknessabsence in Britain in 2011 as co-chair; and of employment outcomes of addiction to drugs oralcohol, or obesity, in 2016.
Professor Black is a past-President of the Royal College of Physicians, of the Academy ofMedical Royal Colleges, and of the British Lung Foundation, and past-Chair of the NuffieldTrust for health policy. The Centre she established at the Royal Free Hospital in London isinternationally renowned for research and treatment of connective tissue diseases such asscleroderma. She has been a Trustee of the National Portrait Gallery.
The role is remunerated at 35,180.00 per annum. This appointment has been made in accordance with the Cabinet Offices Governance Code on Public Appointments.
