Cabinet Office
From 10 June 2014, people will be able to register online in just 3 minutes by providing their name, address, date of birth and National Insurance number.
The online registration service has been extensively tested with real users over many months and will be compatible with all platforms, including smartphones and tablets, to make it easy for everyone to register.
Minister of State at the Cabinet Office Greg Clark said:
This service will bring voter registration into the 21st century and make it easier, simpler and faster for people to register to vote.
Putting public services online is saving taxpayers money and giving people access to services when and where they need them.
Digitising public services
The minister first demonstrated the online system in public in January 2014. It is part of the governments digital transformation.
Individual Electoral Registration (IER)
The new online tool is part of the move to Individual Electoral Registration (IER), replacing the old and outdated household registration system with individual registration. It is a simple 1-step process of being verified against existing records; unlike today, 80% of people will be automatically added to the register without needing to apply at all.
IER will prevent fraud by enabling government to check that everyone on the register is who they say they are. This will lead to greater trust in the legitimacy and fairness of elections.
