Centre for Defence Enterprise
Conekt has been funded by the Centre for Defence Enterprise (CDE) to produce a concept demonstrator for the rapid generation of 3D maps from descending cameras which capture 2D images from streaming video.
The system launches cameras into the air, followed by the automatic deployment of a parachute, enabling the cameras to descend to the ground while recording streaming video. The video images are processed to automatically extract key image frames and enhance image quality. A 3D viewable map is then created using the extracted and processed 2D images from individual cameras and from multiple camera drops.
The resulting 3D map view provides contextually recognisable scenes which can be easily navigated.
The original concept idea has been successfully demonstrated and has set the foundation for fully automated high-tempo 3D map generation in future developments.
Future work will include the investigation of tactical uses and multi-use applied to unmanned air vehicle (UAV) mounted or UAV dropped cameras.
Adrian Mitcham, General Manager, Conekt says:
CDE funding has enabled Conekt to develop a new and novel capability, which not only has exploitation potential in defence but also in a range of other industries.
Based in Solihull, West Midlands, Conekt currently employs around 100 staff and provides engineering consultancy and testing services to clients in the aerospace, defence, automotive, commercial and off highway-vehicles, energy, and intelligent transport systems industries.
