Created by the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC), this week is all about recognising the pivotal contribution made by police staff and increasing understanding of their work across the policing landscape.

Weve taken the opportunity to throw a spotlight on individuals in the organisation and showcase the unique and vital roles they perform.

Jack talked us through his role as Project Manager for Hinkley Point C (HPC) project.

My job as Project Manager is to steer the project, monitor the progress, set deadlines, maintain all the project files, work closely with EDF, facilitate meetings and working groups and manage the stakeholders. Currently Im working on the design of the new police station, which includes collaboration from our team, H&S, Facilities, EDI and many others. Operationally the project is huge, and we are working on a new build thats not been done for over 50 years.

I am very proud of the fact that I am working on such an important project, not only to the CNC, but the country. My overriding drive for anything I work on or role that I am in, is that it must have meaning and purpose. The HPC project and the aspects we want to achieve for the officers and colleagues that will eventually work there tick all the boxes for me. AKA Happy Jack.

Alice shared her experience as EDI Administrator within the EDI team.

As EDI Administrator, I actively liaise with a range of stakeholders to co-ordinate activity and provide EDI subject matter advice. I manage the internal EDI web pages and EDI specific inboxes. I support the configuration and implementation of evolving EDI systems and delivery structures, whilst providing bespoke support to each Affinity Network. I am also responsible for coordinating, processing, and recording all EDI Funding Requests, ensuring accurate logging of budget expenditure, and providing administration for key operational and tactical level EDI governance forums.

Personally, I feel a great sense of pride within my role as EDI Administrator. The overarching goal of the team is to champion EDI principles to improve and foster a culture where every individual can feel a sense of belonging and is empowered to achieve their full potential, which I have felt on a personal level having recently returned from maternity leave in September 2023. Upon my return I had my reservations about my transition back into the workplace and how I would be able to juggle my personal commitments whilst re-establishing myself in my role. Through the support of my colleagues, who have gone above and beyond, I feel a genuine sense of fulfilment from my role which has enabled me to build confidence within the workplace but also on a personal level.

Shelley spoke about her experience as Kennel Assistant at the Dog Training Unit.

Our days are interesting and very varied but always follow a structure based on what is best for the dogs. We clean, feed, exercise, play with, groom, cuddle andenrich the dogs according to their needs. This includes veterinary visits, giving medication and anything welfare-based that enables the dogs to be the best they can be. Our job is mostly carried out outside and in all weathers:thanks to our Cumbrian climate we are usually wet and muddy and very windswept! We are also trained in canine first aid, nutrition, different aspects of canine body language and handling to enable us to deliver our role effectively.

I am always proud of my job but watching and being involved in the progress of our puppies, when they arrive up until they qualify as fully fledged police dogs, fills me with immense pride. I have to admit to a few teary, lump in the throat, moments when one of our rescue dogs comes in nervous and dejected only to emerge weeks later confident, full of life and ready for work, making the rainy days and very hard work worthwhile. At the end of a busy day theres nothing nicer than turning off the lights to the tune of a snoring police dog.
