This statement details the conclusions reached by the Committee on Mutagenicity (COM) regarding the published evidence on the in vitro and in vivo genotoxicity of titanium dioxide (TiO2). This review of TiO2 as a food additive is in response to recent evaluations by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) in 2016, 2019, 2021.
It includes the screening and evaluation of papers referenced in the EFSA opinion (EFSA 2021) as well as an additional literature search to identify papers published between 2021 and 2023.
