Brian Allen is Chairman of the Hazlitt Group that includes the Old Master art dealership Hazlitt Ltd and Arnold Wiggins and Sons, the leading dealers in historic picture frames. For 36 years he worked for the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art serving as Director of Studies for 20 years. He is a specialist in 17th and 18th century British art and has written widely on this subject area. He has organised a number of exhibitions in collaboration with the Yale Center for British Art, the State Hermitage Museum and the State Kremlin Museums. A past Chairman of the National Art Collections Fund (The Art Fund), he is currently also a Trustee of the Holburne Museum, Bath, the Strawberry Hill Collection Trust, the British Sporting Art Trust, the Compton Verney Collection Settlement and the Hermitage Foundation UK. He is a member of the Arts Councils Acceptance-in-Lieu Panel and also sits on the Advisory Panel of the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
National Portrait Gallery Trustees are not remunerated. This reappointment has been made in accordance with the OCPA Code of Practice. It is a requirement of the Code that political activity by those appointed is declared. Dr Brian Allen has declared that he has not carried out any political activity.
