Arrangements for summer 2025
Undergraduates and masters students who are interested in teaching can apply for a paid internship to gain experience in the classroom. The internships last 3 weeks and take place in June or July. The Get into Teaching website has information on how to apply, and the teaching internship providers in each region.
School partnerships that delivered the teaching internships programme in 2024 have been invited to opt in for 2025. We are not currently accepting new applications.
Overview
The aim of the internship programme is to enable undergraduate and masters students the opportunity to experience teaching before they commit to it as a career. This programme is part of Get into Teaching, supporting prospective teachers through their journey into the profession.
Subjects covered by the programme
Undergraduate and masters students studying for a degree in STEM-related subjects and languages can apply to experience teaching in:
- chemistry
- computing
- languages
- maths
- physics
We do not provide funding for subjects that are not listed.
Whats involved
The programme is school-led. School partnerships can choose to collaborate with an accredited initial teacher training (ITT) provider to develop and deliver their programme.
The programme should offer interns a structure of activities to gain a deep experience of teaching. This may include:
- a combination of teaching, running subject-related projects, offering intensive support for children who are struggling, helping with experiments and laboratory work
- structured training, shadowing and lesson observation followed by a chance to jointly plan and deliver lessons
- access to one-to-one mentors who are good or outstanding classroom teachers in their specialism
- opportunities to network with qualified subject specialists
We expect the programme to support and encourage interns to apply for teacher training. This may include providing:
- continued contact with their mentor after the programme
- help with making an application for ITT
- guarantee of an interview for any ITT places that they apply to in your partnership
- ongoing events for interns after the programme is complete
All interns should be encouraged to access additional support from Get into Teaching, including contacting teacher training advisers.
Recruiting interns
Internships typically take place towards the end of each academic year around June and July. They should last for 3 weeks.
School partnerships are expected to start recruiting interns from autumn 2024.
Well provide participating schools with standard application forms that include:
- the minimum level of information required from each applicant
- Get into Teaching branding
Participating schools can advertise their programme on the Get into Teaching teaching internships page.
Funding
The funding is for 1,975 overall for each intern completing a 3-week internship. Of this 1,975:
- 1,275 (425 per week) will be provided to the intern when they complete the full 3-week internship
- up to 700 (200 per week + 100) will go directly to the school to cover coordination costs, including the recruitment of interns - this cannot include marketing costs
Additional funding of 300 per school (not per intern) is available for supporting interns after the programme is complete.
Funding is paid to participating schools through a grant funding agreement.
Funding is provided on the strict understanding that none of the funding is used for:
- advertising, marketing, communications
- any costs associated with maintenance, technical development or updating of existing websites
- the development or creation of new websites
Funding for the 2025 programme will be provided between June 2025 and March 2026.
Reporting and assurance
All participating schools need to submit a certificate of expenditure at the end of the grant cycle as an assurance of expenditure. This is outlined in annex G of the grant funding agreement.
Payments will be staged. They are subject to assurances that programmes are developed and recruitment is progressing.
To receive payment, successful applicants will need to submit documentation before the specific dates set out in the grant offer letter.
Participating schools must also comply with all our management information requests. This includes the retention of evidence confirming identities.
