Department For Transport
Detail of outcome
The consultation received over 3000 responses. The overwhelming majority were positive, with 99% of respondents agreeing there should be an extension and 89% agreeing with the proposed 36 month (3-year) extension.
As a result, and after careful consideration of the need to ensure our roads remain as safe as possible, the Department for Transport will now move to enact legislative changes to extend the length of time Ukrainian refugees can drive in Great Britain on their Ukrainian driving licence, from 1 year to 3. This is in line with the Ukrainian visa schemes and will help thousands of Ukrainians to continue going about their daily lives.
Original consultation
Consultation description
A Ukrainian driving licence can currently be used to drive a car in Great Britain for up to 12 months after you arrive.
We are now consulting on a proposal to extend that period to 36 months, matching the initial time provided for by the Ukraine visa schemes.
This consultation seeks views on this proposed extension, sets out options for the length of the extension and provides the opportunity for other comments.
