Details

The report finds that National Highways has performed well from 2021 to 2022, the second year of the road investment strategy (RIS2), including:

  • working to mitigate a number of challenges such as protestor action that targeted key parts of the network in autumn 2021 and extended decision timescales for Development Consent Orders (DCO) that are impacting the delivery schedule of some major schemes
  • dealing with the impact of the Spending Review 2021 and the governments decision to accept all recommendations from the Transport Select Committees review into the safety and rollout of smart motorways
  • continuing to deliver the major enhancements of RIS2 while operating and maintaining the strategic road network to a high standard

This report builds on:

  • advice from the Office of Rail and Road in its role as highways monitor
  • advice from Transport Focus in its role as road-user watchdog
  • National Highways own reporting

The Highways England performance report for 2020 to 2021 was published in July 2021.
