Official Statistics: Renewable fuel statistics 2023: First provisional release

Department For Transport

August 9

Details

Statistics on the supply of renewable fuels, reported under the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO), based on data available as of 3 August 2023.

The latest 2023 release provided here is the first of 5 provisional data releases for 2023. This remains an incomplete dataset for the year until the data is finalised and sixth and final release of data for the year is published. The final report for 2023 is scheduled for publication in November 2024.

In the 2022 third provisional report, we stated our intention that from June 2023 we would produce and publish tables on a monthly or quarterly basis in lieu of quarterly reports, with a final written report each year in November. Alongside this, we ran a survey to collect feedback for this proposal which closed on 23 March 2023. We received strong support for this proposal and will therefore have enacted this change.

These tables, released on 9 August 2023, are the first of these table only data releases.

The tables include information on the:

  • amount of UK road transport fuel from renewable and fossil fuel
  • number of Renewable Transport Fuel Certificates (RTFCs) which have been issued to fuel meeting the sustainability requirements
  • balance of RTFCs by obligation period
  • trades of RTFCs between suppliers and traders
  • carbon and sustainability characteristics of the renewable fuel to which RTFCs have been issued
  • voluntary scheme data of renewable transport fuel
