DVLA will send you a letter when your licence is taken away, or if your application for a driving licence is refused. The letter will tell you if theres a period of time you need to wait before getting a new licence.
You can then reapply 8 weeks before the end of this period.
There are different rules for when you can drive again if you voluntarily surrendered your licence.
This guide is also available in Welsh (Cymraeg).
Car or motorcycle licence
To reapply, fill in the form for your medical condition and a D1 application form, and send them to DVLA.
Select your medical condition to find the right form.
You can get a D1 application form from a Post Office that offers DVLA services. Check if your local Post Office has the D1 form before you visit.
Check with your doctor that you can meet the medical standards for driving before reapplying for your licence.
You may need to send evidence of your fitness to drive. The letter from DVLA will tell you if this is the case.
Bus, coach or lorry licence
Fill in a D2 application form and the form for your medical condition, and send them to DVLA.
Select your medical condition to find the right form.
Order a D2 pack, which has everything you need to make an application.
If youre aged 45 to 65 you also have to fill in a D4 and send it to DVLA if you havent done so in the past 5 years. Send it in with your D2 form. Read the information leaflet to help you with filling in the D4.
You may need to send evidence of your fitness to drive. The letter from DVLA will tell you if this is the case.
From the age of 65, your licence will need to be renewed each year and your application must be accompanied by a completed D4 medical report form.
Delays if your application is referred to a doctor
Your application may take longer than usual if it needs to be referred to a doctor (unless youre applying for a bus or lorry licence).
If you have a current driving licence and your doctor or optician has not told you that you should not drive, you may be able to drive while DVLA is considering your application. Read Can I drive while my application is with DVLA? for more guidance.
