Hugo Swire welcomes UNGA Resolution on Human Rights in Burma

Minister of State for Asia, Hugo Swire, said:

This resolution on the human rights situation in Burma, again agreed by consensus at the UN General Assembly, demonstrates the international communitys abiding commitment to Burma. We will continue to work with the Burmese Government to protect and promote the human rights and freedoms of all the people of Burma. I also welcome the Burmese Governments constructive engagement in the negotiation process.

Burmas reform process since 2011 has been remarkable and far reaching. The 8 November elections were an important milestone in Burmas transformation towards open democracy but, of course, the process is not yet complete. A constructive and inclusive dialogue as this resolution calls for is needed for a smooth transition to the next government. It is important that all sides approach this in a spirit of openness.

The incoming government in Naypyitaw will face high expectations and a legacy of human rights concerns, which will need urgent attention. Critically, this includes addressing the plight of the Rohingya, who were excluded from the election. I was pleased to see this issue raised by President Obama in Malaysia this weekend, who highlighted the need for the Rohingya to be treated fairly and justly.

Alongside our international partners, the UK stands ready to work with Burma in meeting the challenges ahead.
