Representatives from 32 countries of the Global Coalition against ISIL met on 28 October at the Coalitions Strategic Communications Working Group in London. The meeting was hosted by the Minister for the Middle East and North Africa, Tobias Ellwood and co-chaired by US Under Secretary of State Rick Stengel and the UAEs Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr Anwar Gargash.
Speaking after the meeting Minister Ellwood said:
The Global Coalition remains committed to defeating ISIL on all fronts. As well as the military campaign, the Coalition is working together to counter ISILs poisonous narrative and to challenge its ideology, as well as cutting off their finances and reducing the influx of foreign fighters.
On 28 October I hosted a meeting in London with 32 Global Coalition partners to specifically discuss one strand: the communications effort against ISIL.
As the Prime Minister recently announced, the UK has set up a new anti-ISIL Strategic Communications Cell for which we have committed an initial 10 million.
The Cell will work with Coalition partners on undermining ISILs narrative, disrupt and disprove ISILs online propaganda, eradicating online recruitment of foreign fighters and ultimately destroying ISILs ability to spread fear and lies.
