Operations note 68 describes guidance used by the Forestry Commission and Natural England when considering applications to convert woodland to open habitat.

This guide relates to the Forestry Commission open habitats policy on on increasing open habitats for more diverse landscapes, helping species adapt to a shifting climate.

The guide explains:

  • when compensatory tree planting is required
  • where compensatory planting is not normally required (for sites of exceptional biodiversity value)
