Engineering biology (EB) can be defined as the design, scaling, and commercialisation of biology-derived products and services. It combines an understanding of biological systems with the tools of synthetic biology and engineering principles to unlock a range of transformative advances.
The Engineering Biology Aspirations Foresight project aims to answer the broad question: What are some opportunities that engineering biology might bring to key sectors in the next 10 years and beyond? By developing a set of evidence-based visions for EB across the sectors of agriculture and food, chemicals and materials, health, national security and defence, and resilience, this project will form a key resource for guiding the development of future policy to harness the potential of EB.
At the centre of the project will be 5 aspiration papers, authored by experts in the field. Each paper will describe a specific EB application and the range of ways in which EB could transform our future.
This project is currently underway, with publication on GOV.UK planned for 2025. For more information, please contact: foresight@go-science.gov.uk.
