The 3 million scheme is needed to reduce the risk of flooding in the area which could result in lane closures.
Project manager, Dave Frampton said:
We want to do everything we can to ensure this section of the M5 remains safe and reliable for many years to come and this investment in the drainage system will help us achieve that.
Work has been planned to minimise disruption and the vast majority of it will be carried out overnight, but we advise road users to allow extra time to complete their journeys.
The scheme, which will continue until March 2016, will require 3 narrow lanes to be put in place during the day on 3 miles of the southbound and northbound carriageway between junctions 14 and 13 and a 50 mph temporary speed limit will be in operation for the safety of our workers and road users.
Traffic management will need to be installed under full carriageway closures and this will happen over a number of nights, detailed below:
- 16/10/15 overnight closure northbound J16-13 for installation of narrow lanes
- 17/10/15 overnight closure southbound J13-15 for installation of narrow lanes
- 18-21/10/15 overnight closure southbound J13-15 for installation of temporary safety barriers
- 21-24/10/15 overnight closure northbound J16-13 for installation of temporary safety barriers
- 22-26/02/16 overnight closure northbound J16-13 for removal of
- 26-29/02/16 overnight closure southbound J13-15 for removal of traffic management
- 04-09/03/16 overnight closure northbound J16-13 for surfacing works
During these closures, a clearly signed diversion will be in place:
-
southbound traffic will be diverted off M5 at Junction 13 and travel via the A38 to Junction 16
-
northbound traffic will be diverted off the M5 at Junction 16 and travel via the A38 to Junction
