The Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) working in partnership with the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and Innovate UK has up to 35 million to support projects to develop low-carbon automotive technologies.

The competition for funding is the seventh in a series run by the APC, and its aim is to take demonstrated on-vehicle technologies towards commercialisation in either on or off-road vehicles.

Projects must:

  • develop technologies that will lead to significant reductions in vehicle CO2 or other emissions
  • align with Automotive Council Technology Group roadmaps
  • develop the UKs supply chain capability in low-carbon vehicle propulsion or light-weight systems technology

The APC was formed in 2013 by the Government and the automotive industry to make the UK a global centre of excellence for low-carbon vehicle development and production.

It runs a funding competition every six months in support of that objective. This competition is seeking proposals in one or more of the following technology areas:

  • thermal propulsion systems
  • lightweight vehicle and powertrain structures
  • electric machines and power electronics
  • energy storage and energy management
  • alternative propulsion systems

Competition information

  • the competition is open, and the deadline for registration is at midday on 29 March 2017
  • projects must include at least 1 vehicle manufacturer and/or tier 1 supplier and at least 1 small-to-medium-sized business working in partnership
  • we expect projects to range in size from total costs of 5 million to 40 million and to last between 18 and 42 months
  • businesses could attract up to 70% of their project costs
  • a briefing webinar will be held in London on 16 January 2017
