You can apply for a Merchant Navy Medal if you were a member of the Merchant Navy and you:

  • served in a vessel used to support the UK armed forces
  • meet the eligibility requirements for the medal youre applying for
  • we only issue official campaign awards instituted by the Monarch, we do not issue any commemorative awards

This include anyone who has served in WW2 and various post war conflicts. You can apply on behalf of someone in your family if theyve died or if you have lasting power of attorney.

The Registry of Shipping and Seamen holds very limited records including:

  • medal roll for World War 2 and original papers (not complete) of medal applications for the World War 2 period
  • records of the Falklands campaign
  • a small selection of allied ship pouches from World War 2
