Notice to all Owners, Masters, Officers and Seafarers in the Merchant Navy and those involved in Maritime Training.

This notice replaces MIN 693 from 1 August 2024.

This MIN expires 31 July 2025.

Summary

This notice sets out the examination dates for Merchant Navy Certificates of Competency for the academic year commencing 1 September 2024.

Introduction

  1. Annexes 1 and 2 to this note set out the pattern of examinations for Certificates of Competency to be held in the academic year commencing 1 September 2024. The dates have been arranged following consultation with various representative organisations of the Shipping Industry. The examinations are administered by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA), with the exception of the Officer in Charge of the Engineering Watch (III/1) which is administered by the International Association of Maritime Institutions (IAMI), on behalf of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and are held at their examination centres.

  2. Annex 1 sets out the pattern of Deck Officer examinations for Certificate of Competency.

  3. Annex 2 sets out the pattern of Engineer Officer examinations for Certificate of Competency.

  4. The following Merchant Navy certificates are available under International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping 1978, as amended, (STCW):

Deck Department

(a) Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch <500gt Near-Coastal (STCW Reg. II/3)

(b) Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch Unlimited (STCW Reg. II/1)

(c) Chief Mate >3000gt Near-Coastal (STCW Reg. II/2)

(d) Master or Chief Mate Unlimited (STCW Reg. II/2)

Engine Department

(a) Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch (STCW Reg. III/1)

(b) Second Engineer Officer <3000 kW (STCW Reg. III/3)

(c) Second Engineer Officer Unlimited (STCW Reg. III/2)

(d) Chief Engineer Officer Unlimited (STCW Reg. III/2)
