Ofqual
Computer science is a relatively new GCSE that was first awarded in 2012. It has since gone through a series of changes, in terms of the content and assessment structure of the qualification, and in terms of the size and makeup of the cohort taking the qualification. Due to these changes, and following representations from stakeholders, Ofqual has undertaken a substantial programme of research to consider grading standards in GCSE computer science over time.
This report includes details of the programme of research. There are 2 main strands of work: the first strand used a range of methodologies and analyses to consider whether there is any evidence that standards have not been consistently maintained over time, and the second aimed to consider the possible impact of any changes to the current grading standard, by reviewing examples of student work from summer 2023.
Taking into account the range of evidence, there is a compelling case that standards may not have been consistently maintained through the period from 2014 to 2019, with the standard being set slightly more severely during that period. This is not as a consequence of a failure of awarding organisations to have provided sufficient oversight and care through the awarding process but is a consequence of the changes to the qualification and the context in which it was operating during this period of time.
