You can apply for approval to book and manage driving and motorcycle tests for your pupils if youre:
- an approved driving instructor (ADI) or have a trainee driving instructor licence
- a business that provides driving lessons and employs ADIs
- a motorcycle approved training body (ATB)
- a vocational driving instructor who trains lorry, bus or coach drivers
If your application is approved, you can:
- book more than one test at the same time
- swap test appointments for your pupils
- book some types of test without giving your pupils details at the time
You may lose your fee if you cancel a test at short notice or do not use it.
How to apply for approval
How you apply to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) depends on what kind of test you need to book.
Car driving tests
If youre a driving instructor, youll need your ADI personal reference number to apply to book car driving tests.

If youre a business, youll need an instructors ADI personal reference number to apply to book car driving tests.
Apply to book car driving tests if youre a business who employs driving instructors.
Motorcycle tests
Apply to book motorcycle tests.
Vocational tests
Apply to book vocational tests.
ADI qualifying tests
Apply to book ADI qualifying tests.
After you apply
Youll usually get a decision by email within 10 working days.
If your application is approved, DVSA will send you an activation code by email. To sign in to the booking service, youll need:
- the activation code
- your DVSA business ID
- the postcode of your business
Booking theory tests
You must have been approved by DVSA to book driving and motorcycle tests before you can book theory tests for your pupils.
