Guidance: River Thames: restrictions and closures

Before boating on the River Thames, you should check the current river conditions.

When Where Whats happening
24 May 2024 until further notice Temple Footbridge Right hand arch going upstream has a submerged obstruction causing a navigation hazard. Navigate with caution.
23 April 2024 until further notice Caversham reach Submerged boat reported in central third of navigation channel, just upstream of St Marys Island. Boaters should navigate with caution and avoid using middle of the navigation at this location.
20 April 2024 Until further notice Whitchurch head lock cut Obstruction to navigation above head gates. Boaters should navigate with caution when entering or exiting the upstream lock cut.
1 October 2023 until further notice Teddington Launch Lock Lock is closed for repairs to lock walls, gate ram trench and areas of the lock side.
Until further notice Clifton weir stream Shoal reported downstream of The Plough public house. Boaters are advised not to navigate up Clifton weir stream.
Until further notice Canal Bridge, Radcot A vehicle has damaged Canal Bridge, where Radcot Road A4095 crosses the River Thames. Please be cautious of falling debris if navigating near the bridge.
Until further notice Boulters Lock Gates on the pedestal side do not open fully. Width of the tail gates is restricted to no more than 5.5 metres (18). Please use caution when entering and exiting the lock.

Wednesday 5 to Wednesday 12 June 2024 Forbury Loop on the River Kennet Reading Water Fest 2024: the Forbury Loop on the River Kennet in Reading will be closed to all boats other than those participating in the Reading Water Fest.

Boaters travelling upstream should use the right, Buckinghamshire/Fawley Court side of the river.
Saturday 1 June 2024 9:30am to 4:30pm Sunbury reach Sunbury Skiff Club Head and Desborough Challenge 2024: the navigation channel will be around the old river channel at Shepperton.
Sunday 2 June 2024 11am to 4pm Sonning reach Sonning Regatta 2024: the navigation channel will be on the left side of the river.
Thursday 6 June 2024 10am to 3pm Marlow reach Bisham Dragon Boat Racing 2024: the navigation channel will be on the right, Marlow, side of the river.
Saturday 8 June 2024 8am to 5:30pm Mapledurham reach Charity Dragon Boat Racing Pangbourne 2024: the navigation channel will be on the Whitchurch-on-Thames, right side of the river.
Saturday 8 June 2024 8am to 6pm Sunbury reach Walton and Weybridge Regatta 2024: the navigation channel will be on the Middlesex, right side of the river.
Saturday 8 June 2024 10:30am to 6:30pm Iffley reach Oriel Regatta 2024: the navigation channel will be on the right, non-towpath side of the river.
Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 June 2024 7:30am to 4pm Sonning reach Berkshire District Regatta 2024: the navigation channel will be on the Oxfordshire/non-tow path side of the river.
Sunday 9 June 2024 6am to 9:45am Romney reach Human Race Windsor Triathlon 2024: the navigation channel will be on the Eton, north, right side of the river.
Sunday 9 June 2024 8am to 5pm Sunbury reach Sunbury and Walton Sea Cadets Regatta 2024: the navigation channel will be on the Surrey, left side of the river.
Saturday 15 June 2024 8am to 6pm Marlow reach Marlow Town Regatta 2024: the navigation channel will be on the left, Berkshire side of the river.
Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 June 2024 8am to 5pm Sunbury reach Sunbury and Walton Sea Cadets 2nd Regatta 2024: the navigation channel will be on the Surrey, left side of the river.
Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 June 2024 9am to 7pm Caversham reach Reading Amateur Regatta 2024: the navigation channel will be on the right or north, non-towpath side of the river.
Sunday 16 June 2024 4:30pm to 5pm Bray reach Maidenhead Lions Club Duck Derby 2024: the navigation channel will be maintained to access Boulters weir.
Sunday 23 June 2024 7am to 7:45am Marsh reach Wargrave Sprint Triathlon 2024: the navigation channel will be on the Oxfordshire, Shiplake side of the river.
Sunday 23 June 2024 8am to 7pm Sonning reach Thames Valley Park Regatta 2024: the navigation channel will be on the right, non-towpath side of the river.
Sunday 23 June 2024 10am to 3pm Iffley and Sandford reaches Falcon Boat Club Haslar Race 2024: there will be no racing channels set up, kayaks are to navigate the river correctly and safely whilst being aware of other river users.
Saturday 29 June 2024 8am to 7pm Sonning reach Reading Town Regatta 2024: the navigation channel will be on the right, non-towpath side of the river.
Sunday 30 June 2024 4am to 7am Hambleden reach
