Guidance: River Thames: restrictions and closures

Before boating on the River Thames, you should check the current river conditions.

When Where Whats happening
17 June 2024 until further notice Hurley Lock A tree has fallen in the back channel below Hurley Lock. This is blocking access to the canoe portage.
22 June 2024 until further notice Benson Lock Shoal reported downstream of lock. When navigating upstream the shoal is on the right hand side of the navigation channel. Boaters should navigate with caution when entering or exiting the tail gates.
23 April 2024 until further notice Caversham reach Submerged boat reported in central third of navigation channel, just upstream of St Marys Island. Boaters should navigate with caution and avoid using middle of the navigation at this location.
20 April 2024 Until further notice Whitchurch head lock cut Obstruction to navigation above head gates. Boaters should navigate with caution when entering or exiting the upstream lock cut.
1 October 2023 until further notice Teddington Launch Lock Lock is closed for repairs to lock walls, gate ram trench and areas of the lock side.
Until further notice Clifton weir stream Shoal reported downstream of The Plough public house. Boaters are advised not to navigate up Clifton weir stream.
Until further notice Canal Bridge, Radcot A vehicle has damaged Canal Bridge, where Radcot Road A4095 crosses the River Thames. Please be cautious of falling debris if navigating near the bridge.
Until further notice Boulters Lock Gates on the pedestal side do not open fully. Width of the tail gates is restricted to no more than 5.5 metres (18). Please use caution when entering and exiting the lock.

Monday 17 June 2024 6am to 6am on Tuesday 2 July 2024 Hambleden reach Henley Royal Regatta practice and Henley Womens Regatta 2024: the navigation channel for river traffic will be on the Buckinghamshire bank, Fawley Court side of the river.
Monday 26 June to Wednesday 17 July 2024 Osney reach East Street Pontoon Obstruction 2024: a narrow navigation channel will be available for the period of works.
Saturday 29 June 2024 8am to 7pm Sonning reach Reading Town Regatta 2024: the navigation channel will be on the right, non-towpath side of the river.
Sunday 30 June 2024 4am to 7am Hambleden reach Henley Classic Swim 2024: the navigation channel for river traffic will be on the Buckinghamshire, Fawley Court, right side of the regatta course.
Sunday 30 June 2024 8:30am to 7pm Bell Weir reach Wraysbury Skiff and Punting Club Egham Regatta 2024: there will be a navigation channel on the right, Berkshire, non-towpath side of the river.
Tuesday 2 July to Sunday 7 July 2024 Hambleden reach Henley Royal Regatta 2024: the Regatta takes place between Henley Bridge and downstream of Temple Island. Large numbers of boats of all types will be in the vicinity and your co-operation would be appreciated when passing through the Reach.
Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 July 2024 Teddington reach National Sea Scout Regatta and RNLI 200 Anniversary Parade 2024: the navigation channel will be on the Middlesex, right hand side of the river.
Monday 8 July to Sunday 14 July 2024 Hambleden reach Henley Music Festival 2024: all boats travelling downstream must be navigated within the regatta course and all boats travelling upstream must be navigated on the Bucks bank/Fawley side of the river.
Friday 12 and Saturday 13 July 2024 Hambleden reach Henley Masters Regatta 2024: during the stated times, no unauthorised boats can navigate within the regatta course booms on the Berkshire side of the river.
Saturday 13 July 2024 9am to 5pm Sunbury reach Thames Valley Skiff Club Regatta 2024: the navigation channel will be on the Middlesex, right side of the river.
Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 July 2024 8am to 7pm Teddington reach Kingston Amateur Regatta 2024: the navigation channel will be on the Surrey, left side of the river.
Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 July 2024 9am to 5pm Caversham reach Reading Canoe Club National Marathon 2024: throughout this weekend, between Caversham, Reading and Mapledurham Lock, it is likely you will encounter canoeists participating in the National Canoe Marathon.
Sunday 14 July 2024 6am to 11am Marlow reach The One on the River Triathlon 2024 Marlow: the navigation channel will be on the Marlow, Buckinghamshire side of the river.
Sunday 14 July 2024 8am to 4:30pm Hambleden reach Henley Swim Festival 2024: the navigation channel for river traffic will be on the Buckinghamshire Bank, Fawley Court side of the river. All traffic should pass to the Bucks Bank, Fawley Court side of Temple Island.
Sunday 14 July 2024 8:30am to 5pm Sonning reach Southern Area Sea Cadets Regatta 2024: the navigation channel will be on the right, Oxfordshire/non-towpath side of the river.
Monday 15 July to Friday 23 August 2024 Hambleden reach Deconstruction of the Henley Royal Regatta course 2024: boats travelling downstream should navigate within the regatta course from the regatta finish to the barrier. Boats travelling upstream should navigate on the Buckinghamshire bank/Fawley side of the regatta course.
