Course aim
To enable delegates to practically apply the requirements of RA 1210: ownership and management of operating risk (risk to life) and provide personnel with direct air safety responsibility a better understanding of the MAAs expectations with respect to the practical implementation of risk management regulation.
Training is a blend of taught sessions, facilitated discussions and group exercises and is aimed at individuals who will undertake risk management activities as part of their air safety role.
UK military personnel will be awarded the MASRAMP joint personnel administration (JPA) competency following successful completion of the course.

Course objectives
- awareness of the legal requirement for safety risk management and know how to apply the principles of risk management to practical data
- familiarly and working knowledge of risk management tools such as BowTies, risk registers and the defence hazard risk matrix
- understand how an air system safety case is layered and broad understanding of the contents of RA 1205: air system safety cases
- ability to compile simple as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP) statement having gathered evidence whilst understanding the practices, precedences and criminal tests behind it
- know how to interpret a cost benefit analysis including understanding its limitations, relevant assumptions and legal precedences
- enable delegates to justify evidence and develop arguments in support of safety risk based intelligent decisions
Applicability
This training is targeted at entry-level practitioners in risk management and the training is likely to be unsuitable for experts seeking advanced instruction. Although the BowTie methodology features on the course, it does not provide training on BowTieXP software.
Contracted staff and overseas students who wish to attend an air safety course will need to apply through their STEP point of contact.
Prerequisites
Personnel should have human factors and error management foundation level training as a minimum before attending the course. Understanding can be gained from accessing local awareness training at your unit / organisation delivered by human factors qualified facilitators or instructors.

- RA 1210: ownership and management of operating risk (risk to life)
- RA 1200: air safety management
- RA 1020: aviation duty holder and aviation duty holder facing organizations - roles and responsibilities
- Manual of air safety
- RA 1205: air system safety cases
- RA 1026: aerodrome operator and aerodrome supervisor (recreational flying) roles and responsibilities

A limited number of courses will be delivered at the Centre of Air Safety Training (CoAST), Defence Academy, Eisenhower, Shrivenham but to satisfy overall requirements, this course can also be delivered locally. The closing date for applications is 10 weeks prior to the course start date and applications received after this date will not be accepted.
Once received, applications will be added to the waitlist and scrutinised approximately 9 weeks before the course. All candidates will be notified of the outcome with successful candidates receiving joining instructions approximately 6 weeks prior to the course.
