National Apprenticeship Week 2017 - as it happens

The 10th National Apprenticeship Week (#NAW2017) will bring together employers and apprentices from across England to celebrate the success of apprenticeships over the last decade and will seek to encourage even more people to choose apprenticeships as a fast-track to a great career.

Thursday, 9 March

170 apprentices travelled to the House of Commons today in an Apprentices take over the Commons event. Minister Robert Halfon, Nus Ghani MP and Joe Billington, National Apprenticeship Service, all addressed the apprentices and employers who attended.

Apprentices at the Commons event came from local communities, all undertaking a variety of different apprenticeships. They spent time talking to the Minister and networking with other apprentices.

Thursday was the unveiling of a JCB, built by 68 apprentices and 3 graduates from JCB Loadall Division.

Wednesday, 8 March

Five apprentices travelled to the House of Commons today to meet with Skills Minister Robert Halfon.

The apprentices were all ambassadors from the North West and North East Young Apprentice Ambassador Networks and met to discuss how the networks can be rolled out nationally.

Story Homes managers have been back to the shop floor to mark #NAW2017.

This included Andrew Pearson, Production Director shadowing apprentice bricklayer Josh Horobin at Crindledyke Farm development in Carlisle.

Tuesday, 7 March

The Big Assembly webinar gave those registered the opportunity to hear from apprentices, employers and Minister for Skills, Robert Halfon on apprenticeships and what they mean to apprentices and employers alike.

Lovell Homes are celebrating their older apprentices during National Apprenticeship Week 2017 with Paul who is 51, dad of 3 and grandad of 4, and now an apprentice bricklayer. Read all about Paul and the Lovell Homes apprenticeship programme.

Sparsholt and Andover College have handed their Instagram social media channel to its apprentices. Each day this week apprentices are taking photos and videos of their working day and sharing on Instagram. Follow @Sparsholt_Coll and @Andover_College on Instagram and watch their stories.

Monday, 6 March

National Apprenticeship Week launched today with Secretary of State for Education, Rt Hon Justine Greening MP addressing an audience of almost 100 apprentices and employers attending at Barclays at Canary Wharf.

Two inspirational apprentices from Barclays gave an account of their apprenticeship journey, alongside Lucy Wilkins a 10 year on case study from Somerset County Council and Chris Achiampong from IBM (and star of the Get In Go Far campaign).

There was also a BBC Youre Hired event at BBC Broadcasting House to discuss apprenticeships in the creative industries and what needs to be done to create more opportunities. Hosted by BBC News Reeta Chakrabarti, guest speakers highlighted how important apprenticeships are for business and how, certainly in the creative industries, they need to be made more inclusive to attract candidates of all backgrounds.

Royal Mail is supporting the week with a special postmark, which will be applied to millions of items of UK stamped mail nationwide. The postmark will appear on stamped mail between Monday 6 and Friday 10 March.
